Usage
El auxiliar de modalidad "can" se conjuga de la misma forma en todas las personas. No lleva "-s" en la 3ra persona del singular y va seguido del infinitivo sin "to".

Structure
El auxiliar tiene varios significados y expresa:
Las percepciones involuntarias y las reacciones mentales. Se emplea delante de los verbos: to hear, to see, to feel, to understand.
Examples
Don"t speak so loud. She can hear you.
I cannot (can"t) understand why you"re nervous.
La facultad intelectual, el conocimiento. "can" puede ser entonces sustituido por "to know how to".

I can swim = I know how to swim.
En cuanto a capacidad, "can" puede ser sustituido por "to be able to".

Para preguntar la hora, construimos una frase introducida por "what time".

Existen diversas fórmulas para expresar la hora:
Cuando es la hora en punto, empleamos:
Hora + o"clock
Example
It"s six o"clock.
Nota: "o"clock" solo se emplea para decir la hora en punto y la mayoría de las veces está sobreentendido.
Para indicar "y media", se usa en el lenguaje hablado (y a veces también en el escrito):
Hora anterior + "-thirty"
Examples
The clock says eight-thirty.
The clock says 8:30 (escrito).
Para indicar "y cuarto", se usa en el lenguaje hablado (y a veces también en el escrito):
(a) quarter + after + hora anterior ó
Hora anterior + "-fifteen"
Examples

Para indicar menos cuarto, en el lenguaje hablado (y a veces en el secrito) se utiliza:
